Cyanobacteria—Blue-Green Algae
Cyanobacteria, also known as the blue-green algae, are photosynthetic prokaryotic organisms utilizing chlorophyll a. Unlike other photosyn- thetic bacteria, the cyanobacteria evolve oxygen and may have been responsible for the early accumulation of oxygen in Earth’s atmosphere. Species may be characterized by the formation of akinetes—thick- walled non-motile spores, and heterocysts—thick-walled translucent cells capable of fixing nitrogen.
★MAINTENANCE: Culture blue-greens under moderate to low light in Bristol’s Modified Medium or Pringsheim’s Soil Water.

Optional twin-bulb fixtures are reflective white aluminum with four chains for suspension from the frame. Chains are adjustable in 1⁄2" increments to accommodate growing plants and allow variation in light exposure. Optional fixtures are furnished with two 18" 15-Watt wide spectrum bulbs. Replacement bulbs are available.
