Tracking Traits with Pedigree Charts— Demonstration Kit
As students help construct and then analyze a pedigree chart of England’s Queen Victoria, they learn about sex-linked traits and the genetic patterns associated with sex-linked inheritance. This large- scale 5' x 21⁄2' magnetic chart is easily assembled on any magnetic board. Individual magnetic circles and squares may be rearranged so students can make their own pedigree charts—a great hands-on activ- ity! Includes detailed instructions and reproducible student worksheet. Durable materials may be used year-after-year.
Concepts: Pedigree analysis, genetic probability, sex-linked trait. Time Required: One class period
Materials Provided: Magnetic circles, magnetic squares, magnetic strips.
Eye Color and Polygenic Inheritance—
Student Laboratory Kit
By: The Flinn Staff
Students are intrigued to learn exactly why they often exhibit traits similar to their parents. By performing this straightforward mathemati- cal and visual example, students are able to thoroughly grasp complex genetic concepts. This activity simulates eye color as it would be inher- ited through three generations assuming independent assortment of the genes and polygenic inheritance. Students complete a family pedigree featuring the number of dominant alleles each individual inherited from their parents. The dominant and recessive alleles are represented by two different colored bingo chips. The number of dominant alleles each person inherits is determined by the number of dominant alleles drawn from the paper bag containing the alleles of each parent. Watch the excitement build as students visualize the concrete differences in the number of dominant alleles inherited by recreating their pedigree by mixing using two different color solutions drop-wise in a reaction plate. Includes detailed Instructor’s Notes.
Complete for 30 students working in pairs. 96-well reaction plates required and available separately.
Genetic Code—Super Value Kit
By: The Flinn Staff
Don’t have students just read or listen to you talk
about DNA, RNA, and protein synthesis. Get them up out of their chairs and involved in transcription and translation! The coded messages on the DNA and tRNA code cards in this kit will add fun to learning how the genetic code works. Students will get their individual DNA-coded message from the nucleus, leave the nucleus, travel to a ribosome, and translate the code into a clear word message. If no mutations have occurred, the word message can be quickly verified as correctly decoded. Seven cell sites can be set up using the DNA and tRNA cards provided in the kit.
Complete for 30 students working individually or in groups. All mate- rials are reusable.
