  Genetics of Taste—
Student Laboratory Kit
By: The Flinn Staff
Why are some people very sensitive to the taste of spicy food while others are not? Is this taste sensitivity inherited? This laboratory activity will explore whether the ability to taste various substances is genetic. Students will be involved in collecting class and family data on the ability to taste PTC. Students will then make family pedigrees and determine the genetics of PTC tasting. Taste tests for other substances will illustrate the complexity of the genetics of tasting. Includes work- sheets, complete teaching directions, and over 400 taste test strips.
Complete for 30 students working individually. Super Value Kit is complete for 5 classes of 30 students working individually.
Discover the Possibilities! A Genetics
Probability Activity—Super Value Kit
By: The Flinn Staff
An entire genetics unit in a single kit! Students work at their own pace through this guided-inquiry activity to discover the principles of Mendelian genetics. Introductory exercises help students become familiar with the basic vocabulary of genetics. The manipulative exercises allow students to visualize Mendel’s laws of dominance and independent assortment. Students learn how probability plays a role in genetics as they simulate the process of gamete formation in a dihybrid cross using triangular-shaped dice. Additional genetics concepts, such as incomplete dominance and co-dominance, are also clarified using easy-to-follow examples.
Super Value Kit is complete for 30 students working individually or in pairs. All materials are reusable.
Understanding the Human Genome—
Student Laboratory Kit
By: The Flinn Staff
Students will be excited to learn about heredity, genetics, and the human genome as they examine traits on their favorite test subject— themselves! Common dominant and recessive human traits are explored, some more obvious than others. Widow’s peak vs. straight hairlines are easy to see. PTC tasters versus non-PTC tasters will require a little more investigating. Safely teach blood type inheritance using the simulated blood. Instructor’s Notes included.
Complete for 30 students working in pairs. Super Value Kit is complete for 5 classes of 30 students working in pairs.
