Karyotyping with Ideograms—
Super Value Kit
By: The Flinn Staff
Looking for a fresh and exciting way to teach genetics? In this unique activity, students create chromosomal maps using idealized diagrams of human chromosomes. The process is similar to that used by geneticists—students match homologous chromosomes to discover whether a cell contains numerical errors, such as trisomy-21, or structural errors, such as translocation-21. Students also learn about diseases and disorders that are related to different genotype errors. Physical manipulation of the chromosomes makes this activity fun and engaging for students, allowing them to discover the link between DNA, chromosomes, genotype, and phenotype. Includes detailed background information and procedures, student worksheets, and ten different karyotypes.
Super Value Kit is complete for 10 student groups. All materials are reusable.
Magnetic Karyotypes—
Demonstration Kit
Teach students to identify and classify chromosome
smears according to the Denver System using large magnetic demon- stration models of chromosomes! Begin by building a karyotype of a normal male and a normal female on your magnetic board. Investigate the karyotypes corresponding to eight different chromosomal abnor- malities. These conditions include Down’s Syndrome (Trisomy 21), Edward’s Syndrome (Trisomy 18), Patau Syndrome (Trisomy 13), Klinefelter’s Syndrome, Disomy Y, Triple X (Trisomy X), Turner Syndrome (Monosomy X), and Robertson Translocation. Kit contains one 12" x 36" magnet with copies of all chromosomes necessary to perform this demonstration. Chromosomes may easily be cut from the magnet using a paper cutter and/or scissors.
Concepts: Chromosome smear, karotyping, chromosomal abnomali- ties, homologous chromosomes.
Time Required: One class period
Materials Provided: Denver System Template, magnetic chromosomes.

Human Karyotyping—Super Value Kit
By: The Flinn Staff
Large simulated chromosome smears make this kit
one of a kind. Your students can now realistically cut out chromosomes and use key characteristics to match them into pairs. The concept of chromosome pairing (homologous pairs) will have new meaning as students prepare human karyotypes. The six chromosome sets provided illustrate a normal male, a normal female, a male with Down syndrome, a female with Down syndrome, a person with Klinefelter syndrome, and a person with Turner syndrome. The karyotyping procedures used by a geneticist are employed during the completion of the karyotypes in this kit. The ease of use, the clarity of the chromosome pairs and the inexpensive nature of this pencil/paper simulation makes it a real money saver. You’ll use the chromosome simulation masters for years to come!
Super Value Kit is complete for all students to work individually. Reproducible masters for all the handouts are provided.
