How Hard Is Your Water?—
Student Laboratory Kit
By: John G. Little
St. Mary’s High School, Stockton, CA
What exactly are the film-like deposits left on glassware in your labo- ratory and pots and pans at home? Those whitish deposits are actually residues of calcium and magnesium salts found in water. As these compounds become more numerous, the “hardness” of your water becomes higher. In this kit, the level of hardness in your local water supply will be tested and measured. Kit includes reproducible student handouts, a detailed background section, complete instructor’s notes, tips, sample data, answers to questions, and all of the chemicals needed to perform the lab.
Complete for 30 students working in pairs.
Water Hardness Testing Paper
Easy way to determine water hardness in seconds. Two test papers are packaged in one convenient plastic dispenser. The first test paper allows you to measure water hardness between 0–20 grains per gallon. The second measures water hardness between 10–50 grains per gallon. Both test papers are 4.5 meters in length, enough for over 100 tests.
Lead Testing—Super Value Kit
Students love to play the role of an environmental
“watchdog.” In this activity, students will test materi-
als from their environment for lead content. Lead can be found in many common items and is very hazardous. We guarantee your students will enjoy “hunting” for lead sources and protecting their environment.
Instructor’s Notes, reproducible student handouts, and all necessary chemicals and specialized equipment are provided. The test procedure in this kit is only appropriate for solid items and is not reliable for test- ing lead in solutions. Super Value Kit is complete with enough materials to conduct 100 lead tests on solid items.
Phosphates Test Kit, Color Comparison
This kit uses a fast, simple and efficient technique to measure phosphate levels from 0–10 ppm (higher if samples are diluted prior to testing). Simply snap one of the self-filling test ampules in the sample cup, wait four minutes, and directly compare the test ampule to a set of color standards. Kit includes color standards, sample cup, 30 test ampules, and detailed instructions. A refill kit of 30 test ampules and activator solution is available separately. Color standards have a shelf life of two years or more if protected from excessive light exposure.
