Anatomy and Physiology— Reflexes and Reactions Study Kits
Human Reflex Study—
Super Value Laboratory Kit
By: The Flinn Staff
You pick up a pan by the handle and almost simultaneously realize it is scorching hot and drop it! The act of letting go of the pan is an example of a reflex. The body has numerous reflexes that are designed to protect us from harm. Students perform five tests to observe the innate reflexes the body performs in order to maintain homeostasis. Reflex tests include the patellar, Achilles, Babinski, pupillary, and blink reflexes.
Super Value Kit is complete with enough materials for 15 student groups and five reflex hammers to be shared. All materials are completely reusable!
Measuring Reaction Time—
Super Value Laboratory Kit
By: The Flinn Staff
How fast can you react, and what affects your reaction time? How much variation exists between individuals and their reaction times? This activ- ity uses a unique reaction time strip that allows students to measure one type of reaction time. Students learn that reaction time varies naturally from one person to the next and that there is a limit to how fast reaction time can become. Students experiment with the effect of sight and sound on reaction time. Other reaction time experiments can be performed after establishing the basics with this hands-on kit.
Super Value Kit is complete for 30 students working in pairs. All materials are reusable.
Action/Reaction Lab
Your students will have so much fun with the activities in this kit that they will forget they’re actually learning! An involving investigation into specific functions of the nervous system, including response times to light, sound, and touch stimuli; the effects of fatigue on reaction time; the benefits of training on reaction time; and eye–hand coordination. Students will be able to relate reaction times and eye–hand coordination to general health, mental alertness, fatigue, and the potential effects of chemical stimulants and depressants.
This complete laboratory module includes the Reaction Timer with batteries, the coordination game board and pieces, reusable wall chart for recording and displaying class data, and an instructor’s guide with activities packet.
Reaction Timer
Battery powered, portable and light weight, this digital timer measures reaction speeds to hundredths of a second. The selector switch can be set to send stimuli as light, sound, or touch. Students activate a switch in response to the stimulus received and the LED display clearly shows their reaction time. Experiment with and discuss the effects of fatigue, stimulants, depressants and general fitness (athlete vs. non-athlete). Students will also be able to determine if any one type of stimulus consistently provokes the fastest response. Supplied with an instructor’s guide, the Reaction Timer requires four AA batteries, not included.
