Rewiring the Brain—Super Value Kit

Can pain and other sensations be felt by a body part
even when it is missing? In this activity, students perform hands-on experiments that demonstrate the brain’s remarkable ability to “rewire” itself. In the first activity, students will feel like their noses are two feet long. When students are shown a picture of a hand being touched, they will sense their own hand moving and being touched. An excellent activity to show the amazing power of the human body! Demonstrate that awareness of the body is a learned sensory experience with this memorable activity.

• In the first activity, students explore their depth perception skills and discover the advantages of binocular vision.
• Then they test their hand-eye coordination and learn about visual- motor feedback. Expect lots of laughter as students attempt to follow the path of a maze while looking in a mirror!
• Relate peripheral vision to the properties of rods and cones using a “vision disk” and special reading cards. Students actually “see” the difference between the two types of cells.
• Finally, discover how afterimages are produced by concentrating on strangely colored, yet familiar objects.

Super Value Laboratory Kit
An enlightening “eyes-on” activity to explore and
study peripheral vision! Students investigate their own peripheral vision and relate it to the properties of rods and cones. Which photoreceptors detect motion, shapes and colors better? Your students will literally “see” the difference as they perform activities with the vision disks and special reading and color cards provided with the kit. Success is assured as students relate the results to everyday experiences such as playing sports or riding a bike. Vision disks and cards are made of durable, heavy card stock and are completely reusable. A great value!
