  Astigmatism—
Super Value Laboratory Kit
By: The Flinn Staff
Bring the most common vision problem, astigmatism, into clear focus! In this lab activity, students learn to identify and determine the cause of astigmatism using a set of realistic eye-test charts. The test charts allow students to detect corneal irregularities that cause blurry vision. Gray shadows appear next to solid black lines in the test charts when the shape of the cornea causes light rays to focus on different parts of the retina. Students are amazed that simple charts can give them “insight” into the shape of the eye. A great way to make science real!
Super Value Kit is complete for 30 students working in pairs. All materials are reusable.
Sight and Sound Lab
Your students will conduct a multi-faceted investigation into the senses of vision and hearing—perhaps the two most important senses for gathering information. Topics studied include: how a lens affects vision, field of vision, peripheral vision, capturing sound waves, and the importance of binocular vision and binaural hearing. This complete laboratory module contains the Pinhole Viewer, the Vision Disk, eye charts, lenses, masks, flashlight, rubber ball, an extensive packet of activities and a comprehensive instructor’s guide.
Understanding Sound and Hearing—
Super Value Laboratory Kit
By: The Flinn Staff
Listen up! We are constantly exposed to sounds from televisions, radios, traffic, and even each other. When present at safe volumes, these sounds don’t affect our hearing, but, if the sounds are too loud or last too long, hearing may be compromised. Students perform tests with a vibrating tuning fork to observe how sound waves travel through air and how they affect liquids and solids. Students even perform the Weber and Rinne tests to analyze their own hearing followed by thought-provoking ques- tions that force them to think about their own auditory health.
Super Value Kit is complete for 5 student groups. All materials are reusable.
Human Senses—
Student Laboratory Kit
By: The Flinn Staff
Student interest is always high when the topic of study is their own human body. Students become the test organism as they perform a series of experiments using their own senses. Taste, smell, hearing, sight, and touch are all explored in a series of fun, safe activities. Students will be amazed when they determine their dominant eye, find their blind spot, are unable to sense things on their skin, and are not able to taste some common food items. The series of experiments in this kit are an excellent introduction to the study of the sense organs of the human body.
Complete for 30 students working in pairs. Food items will need to be provided locally.
