Animals and Zoology—Living, Invertebrates
Our invertebrate cultures are packaged and shipped to standards which ensure vigorous, viable specimens. Special packaging and handling requirements are noted in individual item descriptions, along with relevant shipping restrictions. Please note that some specimens may not be available at certain times of the year. Instructions for immediate and short-term care are included.
Water Bears
Hypsibius dujardini. Tardigrades are a phylum of invertebrates that are extremophiles. They can survive at temperatures from just above absolute zero to boiling! Extreme pressure, radiation, desiccation for a decade and even 10 days in the vacuum of space will not kill an entire population of these tiny invertebrates. You can easily view these fascinating organisms using a stereoscope or low power compound microscope.
★MAINTENANCE: Maintain Tardigrades by feeding them Chlamydomonas or other single-celled green algae. Use chlorine-free spring water for all water exchanges. After aerating the culture with a pipet, allow the Tardigrades to settle before harvesting. Using high power on a stereoscope, they will be visible moving throughout the debris.

See page 206.
Snails
Live, active (relatively) snails. Representing the phylum Mollusca and demonstrating key characteristics of the group—a muscular foot, and a mantle-secreted shell. Snails are shipped moist in shallow “bait” containers. Sold by the dozen.
★MAINTENANCE: Pond snails kept in aquaria will eat leafy green vegetables anchored to the tank bottom and will also scavenge flaked fish food.
Hermit Crabs, Land
Students love to watch and care for these endearing, hardy and resourceful creatures. May need to ship overnight in times of excessive heat or cold. Additional shipping charges will apply. A state permit is required to ship to Utah. Not available for Alaska, Hawaii and Puerto Rico. Limited availability November–March.
★MAINTENANCE: Hermit crabs do well on dry, coarse sand or coconut fiber substrate with pieces of bark and places to hide and climb (cardboard tubes, large rocks). They should have a shallow dish of fresh water. Temperature should be held above 20 °C—a low wattage lightbulb makes a convenient heat source. Hermit crabs will eat dry dog food, fresh fruits and leafy green vegetables.
Isopods
Commonly known as “roly-polies” and “sow bugs” these small, harm- less isopods are convenient for study. They are easy to care for and fun to observe. Isopods are great subjects for the behavior studies activities. Supplied in two convenient package sizes. A state permit is required to ship to Utah. Not available for Alaska, Hawaii and Puerto Rico. ★MAINTENANCE: Prepare a layer of peat moss or dead leaves and twigs in the bottom of a waterproof, covered container. Keep substratum damp by sprinkling water on the bottom layer when necessary. Punch air holes in the cover of the container. Feed small slices of potato or carrot every 3–4 days. Remove old food to avoid molding. Animals are prolific and can be maintained for long periods of time.
