Praying Mantis Egg Cases
Viable mantis egg cases (ootheca) containing up to 150 eggs. The praying mantis, Tenodera aridifolia sinesis, is a fierce and fascinating predator, large and easy to observe. Egg cases are deposited in the fall, and the nymphs hatch in early spring. The praying mantis is notable for a life cycle that demonstrates incomplete metamorphosis—developing from egg to nymph to adult. Only available January through June 1. A state permit is required to ship to Alaska, Hawaii and Puerto Rico. ★MAINTENANCE: The egg case should be fastened to a twig or branch and placed in a warm location. Hatching will begin in about 4–6 weeks. Mantises are cannibalistic and must be separated shortly after hatching. Maintain on a steady diet of live insects. If necessary, the egg cases can be held in the refrigerator up to two months before hatch- ing is induced.
Hissing Cockroach
The Madagascar Hissing Cockroach or Gromphadorhina portentosa is quickly becoming a classroom favorite. These animals are endemic to the island of Madagascar off the coast of Africa. The hissing noise these animals are known for is produced by forcefully exhaling air through abdominal spiracles. These excellent low-maintenance pets don’t fly or bite and require a very simple habitat that provides moisture and dark- ness. They are an ideal organism to study metamorphosis, behavioral modification, population effects and many other topics. A state permit is required to ship to California, Arizona, Florida and Tennessee.
Bessbugs
The Bessbug beetle (Odontotaenius disjunctus) . Also known as patent- leather beetles, Betsy bugs and horned beetles, these slow-moving beetles exhibit complete metamorphosis, subsocial colony behavior and even feed their larva predigested wood. These amazing specimens are also able to pull 100 times their weight! Adults can produce differ- ent sounds by rubbing their wings against their bodies; 14 sounds are known, and the most common is a small squeak. May not be available in July and August. A state permit is required to ship to Alaska, Hawaii and Puerto Rico.
★MAINTENANCE: Maintain bessbugs in moist unbleached paper towels and untreated, slightly rotted oak or elm wood in a bucket or terrarium. Keep their habitat out of direct sunlight to avoid overheating. Adults can live up to a year. Ages of shipped specimens vary.
Crickets
Acheta domesticus, the house cricket. Friendly insects that are easy to care for and an essential food organism for most popular reptiles and amphibians. Breeding colonies are also a practical means of demon- strating insect life cycles and incomplete metamorphosis. A state permit is required to ship to Alaska, Hawaii, Utah and Puerto Rico. ★MAINTENANCE: Maintain crickets on coarse sand substrate with lots of hiding places—such as cardboard tubes and egg cartons. Crickets will thrive on fresh fruit and dry dog food.
