Vial Netting
Open mesh plastic netting for use in Drosophila culture vials. A length of netting placed in the vial serves to hold the medium in place and also increases the available surface area for larvae to attach and pupate. Supplied in 3-inch lengths. Packages of 10.
Plugs, Foam, White
Plastic foam plugs are autoclavable and reusable. Plugs throw no fibers or lint and allow cultures to breathe. Will fit containers with mouth diameters of 1" to 13⁄8" (27–34 mm). Supplied in packages of 10.

   Flinn Drosophila Guide
A basic handbook of techniques and experiments
using the common fruit fly, Drosophila melanogas
ter. Topics in the guide include the Drosophila life cycle, culturing techniques, collection of virgin flies, anesthetizing techniques, sexing flies, mating flies and the inheritance pattern of some basic charac- teristics. In addition, simple monohybrid, dihybrid and sex-linked experiments are outlined. Illustrated. 16 pages, 81⁄2" x 7", soft cover.
Culture Media, Drosophila
Instant, dry media specifically formulated for the culture of fruit flies. Blue coloring is incorporated so that developing flies are more readily visible. Media also includes an effective mold-inhibitor. Simply add equal volumes of water and instant media—vials are ready in minutes with no boiling, sterilizing, or mess. One liter of media is sufficient for up to 70 standard culture vials. For best results, use within one year of purchase.

    Safely Anesthetize Drosophila
Here’s a safe and simple way to put fruit flies to sleep without any hazardous or expensive chemicals.
The carbon dioxide (CO2) gas generated with this technique will anesthetize the flies. Follow the anesthetizing with a cold plate technique to
give you time to count and sex the flies.
Materials Needed:
• Alka-Seltzer® tablets • Glass plates
• Test tubes, 20 x 150 mm • Pipet (medicine
Procedure:
1. Place glass plates or other ceramic plates in freezer or refrigerator.
2. Assemble apparatus as shown with test tube approximately one-fourth full of water.
3. When ready, drop 1⁄4–1⁄2 of an Alka-Seltzer® tablet into the test tube. CO2 gas will immediately be generated.
4. Quickly insert pipet tip between wall of culture vial and foam or cotton stopper. Culture vial should be lying on its side.
5. If bubbles enter the glass or rubber tubing, decrease water volume and/ or size of tablet piece used.
6. When flies are anesthetized, transfer them to a cold plate for your observation with a stereoscope. Flies will remain asleep for roughly 2 minutes.
Technique provided by Jeff Orlinsky, Warren High School, Downey, CA.
 • Rubber stoppers, No. 2, one-hole
• Glass tubing, 5 mm outside diameter, two-inch lengths
