Choice Chambers
Study animal behavior with this affordable choice chamber! A connect- ing tunnel between two chambers allows small invertebrates to move back and forth, demonstrating habitat selection and preference influ- enced by abiotic and biotic factors. If one side is moist and dark and the other dry and bright, which side would an isopod prefer? What if both sides were dark and moist, but had different substrates like sand, mud, leaves or rocks? Test biotic factors by introducing bacteria. Escape- proof, with two separate removable lids, they allow your students to predict and observe animal behavior. Great for AP Biology activities! Each dish is 31⁄4" diameter and 1⁄2" deep, and the passageway is 1⁄2" wide.
Worm Composting Kit
Start an agricultural revolution with the equipment and instructions in this kit. Your students will team up with the redworm Eisenia fetida to discover concepts of recycling, decomposition, worm life cycles, soil ecology and organic farming. The cycle begins when students prepare the bin, introduce the worms and add the first food scraps. Bin mainte- nance is simple and, if proper conditions are met, the system remains odorless. The cycle is complete when students grow plants in the rich, organic soil they harvest from the bin.
Includes a tough, recycled plastic bin (19" x 18" x 12") with snap- on lid, ventilation tubes, vent covers, garden fork and a copy of the book Worms Eat My Garbage. Redworms and compressed bedding are required and available separately.
Worm Farm
The state of the art in earthworm culture! All the materials necessary for maintaining healthy worms are included. An insulated, eight quart container with built-in ventilation plugs maintains proper temperature and prevents suffocation. The worm bedding provides optimal consis- tency and water retention capacity and the worm food meets all the dietary needs of even the most active worm. Bedding will support 100 nightcrawlers per pound or roughly twice as many smaller worms. Worms can be kept for several months. Food requirements will depend on number of worms being maintained. Bedding and food are also available separately.
The complete kit includes the 85⁄8" x 12" x 73⁄8" container with sturdy built-in handle, 11⁄2 pounds of bedding and 4 ounces of food, with complete instructions.
Drosophila
See page 43.
Vials, Drosophila Culture
Clear, polystyrene vials. Vials measure 4" H x 11⁄4" W—the standard size for Drosophila culture. Foam plugs (available separately) fit snugly in place, allowing cultures to breathe. Vials can be sterilized with a dilute bleach solution if desired. Supplied in packages of 10.
