 Nematode Study Kit
The best way to learn about living organisms is to watch their behav- ior firsthand. Students will use the Nematode Extractors in this kit to collect Nematodes from local soils. Everyone will be amazed to see what they can “drive out” of the soil samples during a 24-hour period. Organisms will almost magically appear from the dirt. When examined under a microscope, the collected Nematodes will “hook” your students on the study of life. The plastic extractors are heavy-duty and can be used over and over again. The lab activity requires 24 hours to complete so plan for each class to take turns using the equipment. A microscope is required.

Super Value Guided-Inquiry Kit
By: The Flinn Staff
Learn about termites and study animal behavior! Termites are an important part of food chains and soil ecosystems with a complex caste system. Each member of the colony must communicate with other colony members in order for the colony to thrive. Termites use pheromones, vibrations and physical contact to communicate with each other. A chemical in some inks mimics one of the contact pheromones from worker and soldier termites. Students investigate variables, such as color, paper, texture, pattern and ink, to determine what it is that makes termites do what they do!
Super Value Kit is complete for 15 student groups—all materials are reusable! Termites are required and available separately. Termites from Flinn are not able to reproduce or survive if they escape, making them perfect for the laboratory!
LD50 Bioassay for Measuring Toxicity—
Student Laboratory Kit
By: The Flinn Staff
Chemical toxicity is rarely tested directly on humans. Toxicologists use key organisms, like rats, in their experiments and then infer potential consequences on humans. One measure of toxicity is the LD50 number. LD means the lethal dose of a chemical. Fifty refers to the dose of the chemical that will kill 50% of the test animals. Students will conduct experiments of their own design and have firsthand experience using a living organism to measure toxicity. Brine shrimp are easily cultured and are extremely sensitive to changes in their aquatic surroundings. Using brine shrimp, students will see what effects a small amount of chemicals have on them. The LD50 will then be calculated.
Complete for 30 students working in pairs. Brine shrimp cysts are provided as well as the hatching salts. Brine shrimp will need to be cultured prior to the laboratory work. Test chemicals are suggested but must be secured locally.
