The Colorful Chemistry of Sugar,
Water and Density—Guided-Inquiry Kit

Challenge students to create a tower of color by using just three ingre- dients: water, food dye and sugar. Students must mix the ingredients in varying ratios to produce solutions of different density and color. When the solutions are added to a tall cylinder in the correct order, the different colored solutions separate into layers owing to their varying densities. The result is a beautiful tower with multiple layers of color. Students can be true to their school by using school colors, or any colors of their choice. Instructions, sugar and food dye are included.
Complete for 24 students working in groups of 4.

This detailed laboratory procedure walks students step-by-step through the process of accurately preparing solutions of various concentrations. Students must calculate how to prepare several solutions before making them and also must calculate the resulting concentrations of solutions prepared according to given recipes. Laboratory procedure covers preparation of stock solutions, serial dilutions and dilutions of a given molarity. Additional practice calculations are included for student practice or as a post-test.
