Crystal Growing—
Student Laboratory Kit
By: The Flinn Staff
Diamonds are a girl’s best friend! Stimulate student interest by grow- ing 15 colorful “jewels” in your laboratory! In this hands-on activity, students will grow crystals of alum, chrome alum, copper sulfate and nickel sulfate—each with its own distinct color and shape. Each crystal is grown from a single seed crystal in a supersaturated solution. Watch students take ownership of their crystal and nurture it as it grows over a period of several weeks. This activity is a great way to introduce the concepts of saturation, supersaturation and crystal structure. Includes thread, index cards, instructions and enough chemical starting material to grow three of each crystal mentioned, for a total of 15 crystals.
Complete for 30 students working in pairs. Fifteen glass jars for growing crystals are required and available separately.
Giant Crystal Growing—
Student Laboratory Kit

Captivate student interest by growing GIANT crystals! In this hands- on activity, students will cultivate and grow giant alum crystals in a supersaturated solution from a single seed crystal. They will be amazed at how quickly their alum crystal begins growing into its natural, cubic structure and how it continues to grow larger and larger over a period of weeks or months. This is an excellent activity to use when discussing saturation, supersaturation, and solid state chemistry. Alum crystals are easy to grow—an excellent choice for an introductory crystal-growing activity. Includes thread, enough aluminum potassium sulfate to grow 15 giant alum crystals, and detailed instructions.
Complete for 30 students working in pairs.
Growing Crystals in Gels—
Student Laboratory Kit

Growing crystals in gels is a fascinating way to show chemical reac- tions over time. By mixing a few solutions together a gel is made that contains an evenly distributed ion. Another ionic solution or a piece of metal is placed at the top of the gel. As the ionic solution slowly diffuses through the gel a new substance is formed. The two clear chemical solu- tions react and, before your eyes, beautiful crystals appear. Crystals will begin forming within a few hours and will continue growing for weeks to come. This lab makes an excellent year-long display. Test tubes, stop- pers, and all necessary chemicals are provided.
Complete for 30 students working in pairs. The Introductory Kit allows you to prepare three different gels and the Advanced Kit allows you to prepare six different gels.
