Crystal Growing Rock—

Amazing! When a limestone rock is placed in a solution of acetic acid, beautiful popcorn-like crystals actually grow out of the rock. In this activity, students place a limestone rock in a weighing dish with acetic acid and allow the contents to sit undisturbed for a week. The result is a delicate, coral-like covering of white calcium acetate crystals on the exposed rock surface. Use this fun crystal-growing activity to teach students about chemical reactions and the properties of acids and bases. Includes student procedure and Notes, acetic acid solution, reusable limestone rocks, and weighing dishes.
Complete for 30 students working in pairs.
