Chemical Pollution in Water—
A Qualitative Ion Test Super Value Kit
By: The Flinn Staff
Water is an essential resource to humans. When trace amounts of certain chemicals enter our water supply, serious health problems may occur. In this activity, students will test for the presence of several types of simulated polluting chemical ions including chlorides, chromates, iron, lead, phosphates and sulfates. Students will also write chemical equa- tions and test for unknown contaminating ions. Kit includes a detailed background section on sources and effects of water pollution, reproduc- ible student data handouts, complete teacher notes with sample data and answers, and enough chemicals needed to perform 300 tests for each ion. Do not use with real water samples.
Super Value Kit is complete for 5 classes of 30 students working in pairs. Fifteen reusable 24-well reaction plates are recommended and available separately.
Lead Testing—Super Value
Laboratory Kit
By: The Flinn Staff
Students love to play the role of an environmental “watchdog.” In this activity, students will test materials from their environment for lead content. Lead can be found in many common items and is very hazard- ous. We guarantee your students will enjoy “hunting” for lead sources and protecting their environment. The test procedure in this kit is only appropriate for solid items and is not reliable for testing lead in solutions.
Super Value Kit is complete with enough materials to conduct 100 lead tests on solid items.

   Make Your Own Ozone Test
Paper—Student Laboratory Kit
By: The Flinn Staff
One of the most important decisions the human race will have to make this century is what to do about the destruction of the ozone layer. In 1839, ozone was discovered by Christian Schoenbein. He developed a way to measure ozone in the air using a mixture of starch and potas- sium iodide spread on filter paper. In this activity your students will learn about “good and bad” ozone, duplicate Schoenbein’s test paper and test for ozone, and gather data and make conclusions about ozone concentrations in their hometown. A sling psychrometer or other humidity-measuring device is required but not included.
Complete for 30 students working in pairs.
