Shampoo Test—Student Laboratory Kit
By: The Flinn Staff
Students gain a valuable learning experience as they
test the five commercial shampoos provided in the kit. Students will deter- mine the pH, foaming ability, grease-cutting ability, and percent solids of the shampoos. Students then evaluate results and use background infor- mation to draw conclusions about each shampoo’s effectiveness. Detailed Instructor’s Notes provide background information, sample data, and helpful tips. Reproducible student handouts and all necessary chemicals are provided.
Complete for 24 students working in pairs. Super Value Kit is complete for 5 classes of 30 students working in pairs.
Making Soap—Laboratory Kit
By: The Flinn Staff
General, Organic and Biological Chemistry
Soap-making is an ancient craft and one of the oldest known chemical reactions involving organic compounds. Soaps are sodium and potas- sium salts of fatty acids. They are prepared by reacting fats and oils with a strong base, such as sodium hydroxide or potassium hydroxide. In this experiment, students make soap and study its properties. The soap will be prepared via saponification of a fat and oil with a solution of sodium hydroxide. The properties of the soap will then be investigated—its pH, texture, emulsifying action, and solubility in hard water.
Complete for 24 students working in pairs.
Green Chemistry: Making a
Household Surface Cleaner—
Student Laboratory Kit
By: The Flinn Staff and Beyond Benign
Convert a plastic cup into a household surface cleaner with chemistry! This lab introduces students to the 12 principles of Green Chemistry and introductory polymer chemistry, an especially topical activity, as nations come together to tackle climate change. Use this experiment to demonstrate the utility of chemistry as an enabler of positive climate gains in both introductory and advanced courses. This lab was devel- oped in partnership with Beyond Benign. Includes reproducible student hand-outs, Teacher Notes, and all necessary chemicals.
Complete for 30 students working in pairs.
Swimming Pool Chemistry—
Student Laboratory Kit
By: Doug De La Matter, Retired
Madawaska Valley D.H.S., Barry’s Bay, ON
Anyone who has spent any time at the local pool has one “burning” question—“Just how much chlorine was added to this pool?” Swimming pool chemistry involves a rich variety of chemical concepts and practi- cal applications. In this two-part experiment, students first perform microscale titrations to determine the free chlorine concentration in simulated swimming pool water. They then repeat the tests to analyze the change in chlorine levels when urea is added to the pool water. A terrific kit for showing the importance of chemical reactions in daily life! Includes reproducible student handouts, detailed background informa- tion, Instructor’s Notes with sample data and answers to questions, and all necessary chemicals and consumable supplies.
Complete for 30 students working in pairs.
