Toothpaste Test—
Student Laboratory Kit
By: The Flinn Staff
Students will perform experiments to determine the abrasiveness, pH, fluoride content, and foaming ability of each of five different tooth- paste brands. Students will use background and cost/oz information to evaluate the results and to form judgments and conclusions about the effectiveness of each toothpaste. Includes detailed Instructor’s Notes, background information, sample data, helpful tips, and reproducible student handouts.
Complete for 24 students working in pairs. Super Value Kit is complete for 5 classes of 30 students working in pairs. Toothpaste samples are not provided.
Golf Ball Design—Chemistry of Sports
Student Laboratory Kit
By: The Flinn Staff
The relationship between science and sports is undeniable. Tennis racquets and bicycles are made lighter and stronger by nanotechnology; footballs are inflated to the appropriate pressure (we hope) in accor- dance with the ideal and simple gas laws; sports drinks are carefully made and studied using analytical chemistry to improve athletic perfor- mance; and breathable, comfortable apparel is designed by applying the principles of materials chemistry. In this lab, students design the best inner core of a golf ball possible by varying the composition of a reac- tion mixture to take advantage of the principles of polymer chemistry. This lab will hone students’ experimental design and polymer synthesis skills, but a lower golf score is not guaranteed!

Titration of Fruit Juices—Laboratory Kit
By: The Flinn Staff
General, Organic and Biological Chemistry
The refreshing taste of fresh fruit juices is due to a complex blend of flavors and fragrances. Fruit juices get a sweet taste from sugars, espe- cially fructose and glucose, and a sour or tart taste from acids, such as citric acid and tartaric acid. The balance of sugar-to-acid content is one of the main factors responsible for the appealing taste of fruit juices— too much sugar, and the juice will taste bland, but too much acid, and the juice will taste sour. The “total acidity” of fruit juices is determined by titration with sodium hydroxide. In this experiment, students compare the citric acid content in a variety of fruit juices. The concentration of citric acid in each juice will be determined by a titration using phenol- phthalein to find the equivalence point or endpoint in the titration.

Vitamin C Analysis—Laboratory Kit
By: The Flinn Staff
General, Organic and Biological Chemistry
The concept of vitamins—trace nutrients required to protect against so-called deficiency diseases—was introduced in the early 20th century. The chemical structure of Vitamin C was determined in 1933, and it was called ascorbic acid in recognition of its anti-scurvy properties. How much Vitamin C is present in fresh fruit juices? In this experiment, students analyze the Vitamin C content in fruits or fruit juices by microscale titra- tion. They then determine the amount of Vitamin C by comparison against titration data obtained for a series of reference solutions containing known amounts of Vitamin C. After preparing a calibration curve, the amount of Vitamin C in the fruit juice sample can be determined.
