Energy in Photons—Demonstration Kit
By: Rhonda Reist

Ready, Set, Glow! Clarify the difference between the intensity—or brightness—of light and the energy of light. In this kit, light is shined through a rainbow of filters onto a piece of phosphorescent material. The filters absorb some wavelengths of the light and transmit others. If the transmitted wavelengths of light are high enough in energy, the phosphorescent material will phosphoresce or glow-in-the-dark! This demonstration allows students to explore the reasons for this brilliant phenomenon. A great kit to use when teaching absorption and emission of light, interpretation of transmittance graphs and the photoelectric effect. Detailed Demonstration Notes included.
Concepts: Phosphorescence, transmittance, absorption, emission. Time Required: 15 minutes
Materials Provided: Energy in Photons Demonstrator Card.

Fluorescent Dye—
Chemical Demonstration Kit
By: The Flinn Staff
Light up your laboratory with fluorescent solutions! Under normal white light in the laboratory, these solutions appear colorless, yellow, orange and pink, but when the lights are turned off and a black light is shined on them, they glow—and with different colors than under the normal white light! Explore the concepts of absorption and emission of light with this enlightening demonstration. Demonstration Notes included. Concepts: Fluorescence, absorption, emission, electronic structure, spectroscopy.
Time Required: 10 minutes
Chemicals Provided: Quinine, fluorescein, eosin Y, rhodamine B, and ethyl alcohol solutions.
Note: A black light is required and available separately.

Fluorescent Liquids—Demonstration Model
Display these five eye-catching fluorescent liquids in your laboratory! Permanently mounted in a sturdy wooden stand, the sealed vials contain solutions that appear different colors under normal white lights. Turn off the lights, shine a black (ultraviolet) light on the tubes, and observe the glowing fluorescence. Five brilliant colors are seen! Each solution emits a different and unique color, absorbing UV light at one frequency and emitting wavelengths of light in different regions of the visible spectrum. An excellent stimulus to start discussion!
Concepts: Fluorescence, absorption, emission.
Time Required: 10 minutes
Materials Provided: Five fluorescent liquids in sealed vials, mounted in a wooden rack.
Note: A black light is required and available separately.
