Flaming Vapor Ramp—
Chemical Demonstration Kit
By: Bob Becker
Kirkwood H.S., Kirkwood, MO
Are volatile, flammable liquid vapors heavier than air? Safely demon- strate to students that using flammable liquids indoors can create a fire hazard—even far from an open flame. In this impressive demonstra- tion, hexane vapors are poured down an aluminum vapor ramp towards a lit candle. When the vapor reaches the flame, all three necessary ingredients for a fire are present—oxygen, hexane fuel and a source of ignition. The flame travels back up the ramp leaving an impressive trail of fire as it goes. A very safe demonstration illustrating organic vapor flammability.
Concepts: Combustion, flammable liquids, fire safety. Time Required: 15 minutes
Materials Provided: Hexanes, vapor ramp, candle.

Knock Your Socks Off Apparatus Kit
Simple, safe, and exciting “carbide cannon” will
blow your students away! Fill the base of the appa-
ratus with a few grains of calcium carbide and add water to produce flammable acetylene gas. Wait a minute, and then ignite. The projectile, a soft sock, will be propelled across the room! Cannon is constructed of durable PVC and can be reused for many years to come. Includes comprehensive safety instructions, procedure, and demonstration notes. Calcium carbide and a safety lighter are required and available separately.

Piezo Ping Pong Popper—
Demonstration Kit
By: The Flinn Staff
Safely demonstrate combustion by performing the “ping pong popper” micro-scaled explosion! Students will love the loud “pop” as a spark ignites alcohol in a popper and a ping pong ball launches 20 feet across the room. Use this eye-catching demonstration to teach both combus- tion and piezoelectricity. Enough chemical is included to perform the demonstration more than 25 times! Demonstration Notes included. Concepts: Combustion, piezoelectricity.
Time Required: 15 minutes
Materials Provided: Piezoelectric igniter, ping pong ball, popper assembly, ethyl alcohol.
