Energy and Thermodynamics— Demonstration Kits, continued
  The Chef—Chemical Demonstration Kit
By: The Flinn Staff
Liven up thermodynamics with this entertaining
display of culinary wizardry. In an aluminum pan, add water to the “specially formulated” Flinn calcium oxide, and stir. Crack open an egg and pour it in the second pan. Place it over the solution and presto, now you’re cooking! Your fried egg will be ready in no time. An ideal introduction to exothermic reactions and heats of solution. Must be performed on a heat-resistant surface.
Concepts: Exothermic reactions, heats of reaction.
Time Required: 20 minutes
Materials Supplied: Calcium oxide, spatula, aluminum pans, chef’s hat, worksheet master.

The Mini Grain Elevator Explosion—
Chemical Demonstration Kit

Robert Lewis, Retired, Downers Grove North H.S., Downers Grove, IL
Have you ever heard of or read about a dust explosion in your area? They are rather common in grain elevators, coal mines, and sawmills. A spark, even due to friction, can set off burnable dust in air to produce a large explosion.
This demonstration will illustrate the explosive nature of a powder through the construction of a mini grain elevator explosion. A small paint can will be used to represent a grain elevator. Lycopodium powder will be used as the dust. The explosion will “wake up” and fascinate even your most lethargic students. Demonstration Notes included. Concepts: Surface area, combustion.
Time Required: 15 minutes
Materials Provided: Lycopodium powder, candle, nail, paint can with lid, Beral-type pipets.
Thermite Reaction—
Chemical Demonstration Kit
By: The Flinn Staff
The thermite reaction is one your students will never forget. Flames, sparks, temperatures exceeding 2200 °C and melted iron are all produced by this spectacular reaction. Thermite is a generic name given to a very high temperature reaction between a metal oxide and alumi- num. The most common use of thermite is for fusion welding.
The thermite demonstration has always been one you wish you could do, but don’t because of the dangers in getting the reaction started. Recognizing this problem, Flinn Scientific has developed a special starting material called Thermite Igniting Sticks. These new igniting sticks are the most effective, safe, and controllable way to start a ther- mite reaction. Simply light the igniting stick with a match, place it into a pile of thermite, and watch the reaction take place. It’s just that easy and safe. Demonstration Notes included.
Concepts: Exothermic reactions, oxidation–reduction, thermite reaction. Time Required: 20 minutes
Materials Provided: ThermitTM and thermite igniting sticks.
Note: Please remember that any demonstration where the reaction exceeds temperatures of 2,200 °C should always be done behind a safety shield and conducted in a fume hood or better yet outside. If you want to demonstrate a thermite reaction, this Flinn kit is your best choice.
