Energy and Thermodynamics— Demonstration Kits, continued
 Smashing Thermit Reaction—
Demonstration Kit
By: The Flinn Staff
This loud and fiery variation of the classic thermit reaction is sure to grab your students’ attention. Take two rusty iron balls, wrap one in aluminum foil, bang them together and watch the fireworks!
Enjoy all the pyrotechnics of the thermit reaction without the elaborate preparation and cleanup. The iron balls are easily recharged with rust and reusable an infinite number of times. A great introduction to single replacement and exothermic reactions. Demonstration Notes included. Concepts: Oxidation–reduction, single replacement reaction, exothermic reaction, activation energy, thermit reaction.
Time Required: 5 minutes
Materials Provided: Two rusted iron balls and aluminum foil.

Superheated Steam—
Demonstration Kit
By: The Flinn Staff
Vividly demonstrate to your students the thermal energy content and potential skin burning hazards associated with steam. Steam is chan- neled through a copper coil heated by a Meker burner flame, which raises the temperature of the steam well above 100 °C. Place a piece of paper in the exhaust steam and watch as it chars. Hold a match head in the exhaust—it will ignite! Detailed Demonstration Notes included. Concepts: Phase changes, heat released by condensation, steam. Time Required: 15 minutes
Materials Provided: Copper coil tubing, 1-hole #6 rubber stopper. Note: A Meker burner, 250-mL Erlenmeyer flask, hot plate, and support stand and clamp are needed for this demonstration and avail- able separately.

The Carbon Soufflé—
Chemical Demonstration Kit
By: The Flinn Staff
Be a chemical gourmet—whip up a carbon soufflé! Your students will be amazed as they watch a yellow solid-liquid mixture turn brown, then black, expand out the top of the beaker—and solidify. The beaker becomes extremely hot and the odor of burnt sugar will fill the room. Demonstration Notes included.
Concepts: Exothermic reactions, dehydration reactions, neutralization reactions.
Time Required: 20 minutes
Chemicals Provided: Sucrose, sulfuric acid, and sodium carbonate. Note: Perform this demonstration in a fume hood or well-ventilated lab.
