The Glowing Germ Contamination—
Demonstration Kit
By: Rhonda Reist
Olathe North High School, Olathe, KS
It’s amazing how fast germs can spread! In this activity you’ll place a small quantity of glowing lotion on an object in the lab. Discuss how bacteria and germs are spread, telling students that you’ve contaminated one object in the lab before class and want to see how far the contamina- tion has spread. Turn off the lights and turn on an ultraviolet (black) light. Students will be amazed at the glowing contamination.
A perfect activity to illustrate the importance of good laboratory hygiene. Demonstrate why you should never eat in a lab setting and why you should always wash your hands before leaving the lab. Comes complete with use instructions and presentation tips.
Concepts: Fluorescence, epidemiology, laboratory hygiene safety. Time Required: 20 minutes
Materials Provided: Glowing Germ fluorescent lotion, 8-oz bottle. Note: An ultraviolet light and a completely darkened room are neces- sary for this demonstration.

Alcohol Cannon Apparatus Kit—
Combustion of Isopropyl Alcohol
By: The Flinn Staff
Launch your students into a discussion of chemical reactions with this fun, safe, and exciting demonstration. This thrilling demonstration of the controlled combustion of isopropyl alcohol teaches students the concepts of combustion, thermochemistry, exothermic reactions, and gas laws. When the vapor is ignited, the foam ball is propelled across the room.
Cannon is constructed of PVC and can be reused for many years to come. Includes safety instructions, procedure, demonstration notes and tips. Isopropyl alcohol, 7" foam ball, and safety lighter are required and available separately.

Cool Reaction—
Chemical Demonstration Kit
By: The Flinn Staff
Many reactions produce heat. In fact, when students think of chemical reactions, heat production is often expected. However, endothermic reactions—reactions that consume heat—can be just as exciting. One of the most striking examples of this is when the solids barium hydroxide and ammonium thiocyanate are mixed together in a beaker. Demonstration Notes included.
Concepts: Endothermic reactions.
Time Required: 20 minutes
Chemicals Provided: Ammonium thiocyanate and barium hydroxide. Note: A thermometer is required and available separately.
