     Flinn Forensic Files—
Bloodstain Pattern Analysis—
Examining Evidence Using Fingerprint Analysis—
Forensic Laboratory Kit
The answers to Friday’s exam are mysteri- ously missing from the teacher’s desk drawer. Fingerprints are taken from the “crime scene” to help identify anyone who may have opened the drawer. One set of prints belongs to the teacher but an additional set of fingerprints is also found. Students are given a copy of the suspect’s fingerprints
to compare the prints of each member of the class. Complete for 30 students working individually.

Who Cheated in the Race?
Red Blood Cell Volume Forensic Laboratory Kit
Blood-doping artificially increases the number of red blood cells in the body. In this kit, students analyze red blood cell volumes in simulated blood samples. Students conduct a hematocrit of several samples and determine whether any of the cyclists cheated. Includes instructions with student handouts, and Teacher Notes. Complete for 15 groups of students. Contains no actual blood or blood products.

Finding Evidence in Fibers
Forensic Laboratory Kit
Imagine being a detective, sifting carefully through a crime scene, hoping to find any evidence—even a single thread—that will link a suspect to the scene. Students perform burn and microscopy analysis on six known fiber types and compare their results to a fiber found at the crime scene. Once the evidence fiber is identified, students deter- mine if it matches a garment disposed
of across town by a suspicious-looking man—bringing them one step closer to determining the identity of the criminal! Complete for 30 students working in pairs. FB2096 | $31.70
Blood and bloodstains are common at many crime scenes, and bloodstain patterns often reveal key elements in reconstruct- ing a crime. In this lab, simulated blood is used to collect data in bloodstain patterns as students drop simulated blood under controlled conditions in the laboratory. By controlling the height and angle of each drop, students can analyze spatter patterns and use the trends like a criminalist to analyze the origin of unknown bloodstains. Complete for 30 students working in pairs. FB1643 | $37.80

DNA Forensics—Student Laboratory Kit
Students become forensic scientists and use biotechnology to solve a crime by analyzing DNA samples collected at the “crime scene.” The DNA samples are run through a gel electropho- resis “maze” and distinct bands separate—clearly leading to the guilty person. This nonviolent scenario teaches students about DNA electrophoresis! Includes student and teacher instruc- tions, plus a crime report and all the materials necessary to run six gels. Complete for 6 student groups. Requires electrophoresis apparatus and power supply. DNA source is Lambda phage, which must be kept frozen prior to use.
