Product Details

Immerse your students in the science practices with engaging laboratory activities and POGIL™! Your students will practice important science skills while learning key meiosis concepts. This kit contains a demonstration, a POGIL activity and a lab activity. Students learn to predict outcomes by manipulating models and learn key content through interpreting models and carrying out guided-inquiry lab activities. Complete the learning cycle with claims-evidence-reasoning style analysis prompts.

The demonstration activity involves simulating the process of meiosis. Next, students complete the Meiosis POGIL activity to build conceptual understanding of how cells change during meiosis. In the culminating lab activity, students produce models of the offspring of a recently discovered creature.

Performance Expectations

HS-LS3-1: Ask questions to clarify relationships about the role of DNA and chromosomes in coding the instructions for characteristic traits passed from parents to offspring.
HS-LS3-3: Apply concepts of statistics and probability to explain the variation and distribution of expressed traits in a population.
HS-LS3-2: Make and defend a claim based on evidence that inheritable genetic variations may result from (1) new genetic combinations through meiosis, (2) viable errors occurring during replication, and/or (3) mutations caused by environmental factors.
