Product Details

How does the periodic table allow students to explain and predict the properties of the elements? Helping students recognize periodic trends in the properties of the elements is key to understanding the full value of the periodic table. The purpose of this microscale experiment is to identify trends in the reactions and solubility of the alkaline earth metals. Students first compare the reactions of metals in order to discover the trend in metal activity both within a group and across a period. They then study the solubility pattern of alkaline earth metal compounds and use the resulting data to identify an unknown. Marie Curie used the solubility trend of alkaline earth metal compounds to discover the element radium. What will your students discover as they study the properties of the elements? Includes reproducible student handouts, detailed background information, complete Teacher Notes with sample data and answers to all questions, and all necessary chemicals and consumable supplies.

Complete for 30 students working in pairs. Super Value Kit is complete for 5 classes of 30 students working in pairs. Fifteen reusable 24-well reaction plates are recommended and available separately.
