Technical Note:
Technically the name petroleum ether is a misnomer. In the chemical sense it is not an ether, but consists chiefly of low boiling fractions (B.P. 30-60 ºC) of petroleum, mostly pentanes and hexanes. Names like benzin and naphtha are synonymous to petroleum ether, which is not a peroxidizable substance like ethyl ether.
