Product Details

Dramatically demonstrate the chemical activity at the anode and cathode of your electrophoresis apparatus. The color changes at the two ends of the electrophoresis tank will be very striking when no buffer is used. When you add buffer solution during the follow-up run, the color will not change! Students will quickly understand why a buffer solution is used in an electrophoresis apparatus. Enough materials are provided for seven demonstrations.

Concepts: pH, buffer system, electrophoresis.
Time Required: 20 minutes
Note: Requires electrophoresis apparatus and power supply.

Performance Expectations

MS-PS1-2. Analyze and interpret data on the properties of substances before and after the substances interact to determine if a chemical reaction has occurred.
HS-PS1-2. Construct and revise an explanation for the outcome of a simple chemical reaction based on the outermost electron states of atoms, trends in the periodic table, and knowledge of the patterns of chemical properties.
