In this investigation students place a model cell composed of phenolphthalein agar blocks in a hydrochloric acid solution. After 10 minutes the agar cubes are cut in half and the distance the acid penetrated is measured. Using their data students determine how surface area to volume ratio affect the rate of diffusion.
