The BacTalk Cell Signaling program engages students in exploring how bacteria communicate through quorum sensing and bioluminescence, providing a clear and accessible introduction to cell signaling, signal transduction, and population-level behavior. Using safe, non-pathogenic, auxotrophic Vibrio campbellii strains, students co-plate bacterial cultures and observe the effects of both genetic mutations and chemical inhibitors on light production. This investigation is designed to align with AP Biology, IB Biology, and NGSS standards and integrates Anchored Inquiry Learning and Claim–Evidence–Reasoning practices. With simplified preparation requiring only a single agar medium, the kit offers an efficient and classroom-friendly way to connect core molecular biology concepts with real-world applications. The program is structured for three to five 50-minute sessions, supports eight workstations of up to four students each, and requires cold storage at 20 °C and 4 °C as indicated.
Workstations: 8, Students: 32, Lab Sessions: 3–5, Strains: 3 Vibrio campbellii (WT, luxM–, luxB–), Media: 10× supplement, Antibiotic: Ampicillin, Inhibitor: QStatin, Consumables: LB agar & broth, Storage: 20 °C & 4 °C, Biosafety: BSL-1 auxotrophic strains.
