Spectrum Analysis Chart
The bright line (emission) spectra of ten elements are shown along with the electromagnetic spectrum with a detailed visible spectrum, the solar spectrum, Doppler Effect and others. Line drawings illustrate the methods of producing various spectra and the applications of spectrum analysis. A great companion when using spectrum tubes or spectro- scopes or when doing flame tests. Spectrum Set
A complete set of graphical models to represent
emission spectra. CD contains 15 spectra: air, argon,
bromine, carbon dioxide, chlorine gas, helium, hydrogen, iodine vapor, krypton, mercury vapor, neon, nitrogen, oxygen, water vapor, and xenon.
Spectrum Tubes
Spectrum tubes are glass tubes filled with a gas, usually that of an element or small molecule. Sealed metal electrodes are located at the ends of each tube. When a spectrum tube is placed in a spectrum tube power supply and the power supply is turned on, an electrical discharge is passed through the tube, causing electrons in the gas to be excited. As the electrons relax, they emit light—a characteristic color for each gas. When students view the lighted tube through a spectroscope, they can observe the unique set of spectral lines for each gas. Spectrum tubes should only be used intermit- tently and are not intended as a continuous source of light.
*Note: It is normal for the iodine spectrum tube to contain small pieces of solid iodine.
Spectrum Tube Power Supply
Safety was a prime consideration in the design of this spectrum tube power supply. Specially molded spectrum tube sockets easily enable the tube(s) to be placed in position but also provide maximum protection for the user against accidental electrical contact. The sockets are fully shielded. A current-limiting transformer operates from your 110 V AC line to provide the voltage to operate spectrum tubes. The bottom socket of the power supply is spring loaded to facilitate easy tube placement and removal. The power supply is confined within a heavy metal box. A pilot light, 6-foot grounded power cord and an on/off switch are built into the unit. Dimensions: 141⁄2" H x 41⁄2" W x 3" D.

Make Your Own Slides of Spectra
Slides of spectra can be made using the Flinn C-Spectra® and your 35 mm camera. Film with a rating equal to 300 or more would be required. The Flinn C-Spectra can be found on page 497.
Focus the Flinn C-Spectra by eye. Set the camera at infinity for 4–5 second exposure with a wide open shutter. The camera should be on some steady device like a tripod. Much like the photographer
of old, you must rig a light-tight system (using heavy black cloth) that excludes all light from the camera except that from the focused Flinn C-Spectra. Since the Flinn C-Spectra is available in 8" x 10" sheets, you can do some lightproof rigging between the camera and the spectrum tube.
