  Cells and Genetics—DNA Lab Activities
DNA Isolation—Student Laboratory Kit
By: The Flinn Staff
Learn how to isolate DNA from human cells—yours!
DNA can be isolated from many types of tissue. In this activity, students extract DNA from their own cheek cells. The procedure for securing student cheek cells is safe and requires only a rinsing of the mouth with water. Isolating “personal” DNA adds a great deal of student interest to a lab that otherwise might be less than exciting. Note: The procedures detailed in this kit can be used to “spool” DNA from many different sources other than cheek cells.
Complete for 30 students working individually. Super Value Kit is complete for 5 classes of 30 students working individually.
Codon Bingo—Super Value Game
By: Cynthia Mannix
The Bishop’s School, La Jolla, CA
Put life into the genetic code. This lively bingo game will add some fun to the difficult concepts of transcription and translation. Students will get very involved in the gaming part of this activity and will start incorporating new words such as uracil, thymine, adenine, guanine, and cytosine into their vocabulary. Before they know it the words will become second nature and they will use them with new understanding. The flexibility of setting up the bingo cards makes for an unlimited number of uses and creative alternative games. The easy to use transla- tion wheel included with the game is a great teaching device. All game pieces, duplicating masters, and game directions are included.
Super Value Game includes materials for students to play individually or in teams. All materials are reusable.

DNA Sequencing Simulation—
Student Laboratory Kit
By: The Flinn Staff
History will record the Human Genome Project as one of the top accomplishments of the 20th century. All 3,000,000,000 base pairs in the 20,000–25,000 genes in the human genome have been sequenced. How did biologists determine the sequence of all those base pairs? With the simplified models used in this simulation, students will be able to discover the principles involved in the DNA sequencing process. The Sanger termination principle will be graphically illustrated with the cutout models in this hands-on activity. The models will provide an excellent review of DNA structure and the model manipulations will extend student understanding of the anti-parallel nature of DNA.
Complete for 30 students working in pairs.
DNA in Action—Super Value Kit
By: The Flinn Staff
You have described it as a “twisted ladder” or a
“double helix.” These descriptions are very difficult for students to understand and visualize. Now your students can build their own DNA model and twist it themselves! After building the basic structure, students can model DNA replication, transcription and translation. Designed for twelve working groups of students. Kit contains more than 2,700 pop beads. Additional pop beads can be purchased separately.
Super Value Kit is complete for students to work individually or in groups. All materials are reusable.
