Protein Synthesis—
Student Laboratory Kit
By: The Flinn Staff
Protein synthesis is essential for all living organisms. Make this process easy and fun to learn with this descriptive and highly visual activity. Students assemble models to understand the roles of mRNA, tRNA, codons, anticodons, amino acids and ribosomes in the process of protein synthesis. Watch as the students quickly grasp the concept of how individual genes are translated into protein chains. A must for the biology classroom!
Complete for 30 students working in pairs
Student DNA Model Kit
A fascinating discovery-oriented approach to learning about the structure and function of DNA. Students embark on a sequential problem-solving exploration using clues, hints, and the model pieces themselves. By manipulating the pieces and seeing which can be fit together, they use the process of elimination to determine what each piece represents. Students move on to construction of the DNA model, “unzipping” it, and replicating it—all in proper form and sequence. Students will also learn about translation, transcription, protein synthe- sis and mutations.
Enough materials for 2 to 3 student groups.
Chromosome Smears—
Student Laboratory Kit
By: The Flinn Staff
Students view actual chromosomes! The salivary gland chromosomes of Drosophila virilis are the perfect choice for this activity. They are large and relatively easy to see. Students extract the chromosomes from the larva, prepare slides, and then stain them for viewing with their microscopes. The concept of chromosome becomes concrete after seeing the real thing. An activity your kids will never forget! Instructor’s Notes, reproducible student handouts, and all necessary chemicals are provided.
Complete for 30 students working in pairs. Drosophila virilis culture vials are required and available separately. Allow 2 weeks for delivery of Drosophila.
Preparation of Human Chromosome Spreads
This karotyping kit is different from most as actual human chromo- somes are used. The excitement will run high as students prepare their own slide and then hunt for a cell with a complete set of chromosomes. Students can count the number of chromosomes and discover that some cells possess a chromosome number greater than the diploid number. That is because the cells used for this laboratory are of Tudor origin and the number of chromosomes will vary among cells. Some cells will contain three or four copies of a specific type because of the unique cell line. The cells provided are fixed in an acetic acid–methanol fixative for completely safe use. Includes detailed instructions and student materials.
Complete for 40 students.*
