Using the Qualitative Ion Test Chemistry Laboratory Kit, students perform qualitative ion tests on known anion and cation solutions. Students are challenged to observe, analyze and identify cations and anions that make up an unknown.
How do we analyze an unknown chemical? Making comparisons to “known” chemicals is one common method. In this laboratory activity, students will perform qualitative ion tests on four known anion and six known cation solutions. Then, students will then be challenged to use their observations to analyze and identify the cation and anion that make up an unknown salt, through comparison to the known tests. Reproducible student handouts include easy-to-follow lab instructions, data tables and questions. Helpful Teacher Notes provide preparation information, tips, sample data and answers to questions. Ion testing solutions, test reagents, pipets, labels and wood stirrers are provided.
