In this lab experience, students examine the colors that various metallic salts emit when heated, similar to what happens during firework displays. Students also practice wavelength, frequency and energy calculations. Editable, differentiated instructions range from a time-sensitive prescriptive lab to full open inquiry, and robust online videos and content—including a virtual reality (VR) simulation—help students prepare for and better understand the labs they’re conducting.

Outcomes: Students will observe various colors emitted by the metallic salts when heated. Different color flames have different wavelengths and different energies. There are multiple real-world applications for this lab, including fireworks and colored flame candles.
