In this lab experience, students make a wet mount of an onion epidermis and observe the epidermal cells when exposed to sodium chloride solution. Students are challenged to determine the concentration of five different sucrose solutions using potatoes. Editable, differentiated instructions range from a time-sensitive prescriptive lab to full open inquiry, and robust online videos and content—including a virtual reality (VR) simulation—help students prepare for and better understand the labs they’re conducting.

Concepts:
Water potential, diffusion, osmosis, turgor pressure 
Outcomes: Students will discover that the water potential is higher inside the cell than the surrounding environment and the water will exit the cell because water moves from an area of higher potential to lower potential. They will discover that the body works to maintain electrolyte homeostasis and that our water intake can impact this.
