Introductory Bacteria—
Student Laboratory Kit
By: The Flinn Staff
Students will culture bacteria in simple infusion cultures and then prepare slides
to observe and identify the bacteria through a microscope. Working individually,
through self-paced experiments, students will gain vital and practical laboratory
experience as they apply the classical Gram staining technique for bacterial identification.
Detailed instructions are provided.

Bacteria in Milk—
Student Laboratory Kit
By: Jeannette Miller
Schalmont High School, Schenectady, NY
How much bacteria grows in refrigerated milk? What happens if milk stands out for
a day or even for a few hours? Students test refrigerated milk, boiled milk and roomtemperature
milk to determine and compare their relative bacterial conditions.
Students use the resazurin color reaction to demonstrate the relative amounts of
bacteria in the various milk samples. Kit materials include the test tubes, powdered
milk and the resazurin test solution.
Complete for 30 students working in pairs. Super Value Kit is complete for five
classes of 30 students working in pairs.

slides in a plastic box, three overhead color transparencies, and detailed
student worksheets. Two slides are carefully stained to show mouth bacteria
and three smears of typical bacteria: cocci, bacilli, and spirilli. Other slides show
Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli. Bacillus subtilis, hay bacillus, is
presented with a smear of bacilli and spores. Spirillum volutans, a large species from
putrid water, is also part of the set. All materials come packaged in a convenient
storage box.

Bacteria Soil Ecology—
Student Laboratory Kit
By: David Brock and Mariel Torres, Roland Park Country School, MD
and Katie Loya, University of Maryland, MD
A great introduction to soil microecology and how soil influences all multi-cellular
organisms in an ecosystem. How much bacteria is in your soil? What is the purpose
of bacteria in soil? Students will use Petrifilm™ strips and serial dilutions of soil
to answer these questions. This easy-to-perform experiment produces excellent
results. Students will have the opportunity to create their own hypothesis, design
and perform experiments and analyze and interpret data. Includes reproducible
student handouts, complete Teacher Notes and all consumable supplies needed to
perform the lab.
Complete for 24 students working in pairs.
