Liability Reduction
SAFETY SUPPLIES & EQUIPMENT LIABILITY REDUCTION
Citation, Safety Violation
A helpful safety tool for the science teacher.
If auto drivers violate the rules of the road,
they receive a traffic ticket or citation. The
same can be made to apply to students in
the science laboratory. The safety violation
citation is a package of 100 citations interleafed
with carbonless yellow copies for
your records. When you encounter a violation
worthy of a citation, simply fill in the spaces
and hand the student his or her citation. The
penalty is entirely up to you to establish. A
brief teacher’s guide page is provided with each package of 100 two-part citations
containing teacher record copies. 41/4" x 51/2".

Laboratory Safety Contract
for Science Students
The foundation of any school science safety
program is the development and use of a student
safety contract—a contract clearly spelling
out the safety rules of the science laboratory
which students must follow. Flinn Scientific has
developed the “ideal” safety contract—50 rules
covering a wide variety of safety issues. It is the
most complete contract ever developed.
Students are expected to read and sign the
contract, which signifies that they have been instructed in the requirements for
safety in the school laboratory. While such a contract between student and science
teacher may not carry the weight of law, it nevertheless does provide evidence
that the student has, in fact, been clearly told (in writing) what is expected and has
signed off indicating his or her understanding of the rules and policies of the school
science laboratory. A necessary safety and liability reduction aid! Pad of 50.

Did You Know?
Federal OSHA rules and regulations do not apply to public schools. Yes, these federal
reg ula tions are applicable to private schools. There may be state regu lations, however,
that are applicable to your school. The state regulations may be similar to federal regulations.
Why do we mention that here?
Because we do not want you to buy things you do not need to meet regulations that
may not apply to your school. Some sales-hungry lab supply houses will sell you things
you do not need. Get the facts before you buy. Call Flinn if you have questions.

Mercury Safety Aids
Mercon™ Mercury Spill
Control Kit
The Mercon™ solution creates a “shell” over
the mercury, immediately stopping it from
emitting vapor. Once the “shell” is in place, the
active ingredients in Mercon chemically convert
vapor-producing elemental mercury into a nonvapor
producing mercuric salt. The Mercon
Mercury Spill Kit includes:
• Merconspray™ Reduces airborne mercury
vapor to provide a safer environment for cleaning up spills. 250-mL.
• Merconvap™ Effective liquid mercury vapor suppressant and decontaminant.
• Mercury Aspirator A simple and easy-to-use device to pick up mercury off the
floor or countertop. Tapered suction tip allows access to hard-to-get areas where
mercury can hide.
• Mercontainer™ For safe storage of mercury after cleanup. Special sponge lining
coated with a Mercon solution allows for repeated uses.
• Merconwipes™ Package of 70 towelettes pre-charged with Merconvap concentrate.
Cleans and decontaminates mercury spill areas.

AP8771 Mercon™ Mercury Spill Control Kit $231.12
Zinc Dust
Once you have cleaned up the visible droplets of spilled mercury,
how do you handle the remaining residue? One option is to sprinkle
zinc dust onto the spill site. Zinc dust reacts with elemental
mercury to form a very safe amalgam that is easy to handle.

Z0005 Zinc Dust, Practical, Zn 500 g $24.95
Use Mercon™ Mercury
Spill Control Kits
1. Block off from foot traffic a large area around center of spill site (approximately 6-foot
radius). Check clothing and footwear for mercury and mercury debris. Remove contaminated
footwear at edge of spill site.
2. Remove the Merconspray™ from the spill kit and, while wearing gloves and goggles,
proceed to spray the ambient zone above the spill radius. Spray generously (18–20 pumps)
into the air starting at breathing level and working down toward the floor, concentrating
on the actual spill itself. CAUTION: The floor surface may now be extremely slippery!
3. Remove the Merconvap™ bottle from the spill kit and replace shipping cap with squirt
nozzle from kit. Cover all visible mercury with Merconvap, leaving a wide margin for any
unseen droplets. Ensure that any cracks in flooring are saturated with Merconvap to
suppress any droplets that may be out of sight. The spill is now safe to clean up.
4. Open Mercontainer™. Using the cleanup pad, carefully push the mercury droplets,
broken glass and other contaminated debris toward the center of the spill to minimize
mercury surface area. Using the Mercury Aspirator, collect the mercury and place it in
the Mercontainer. The Mercury Aspirator is most effective when it has been emptied
after each use. The Mercontainer may be reused, provided that the Mercontainer is no
more than half full and there is a backup Mercontainer for larger spills. Note: Plastic
Beral-type pipets work very well in picking up mercury droplets.
5. Decontaminate spill site. Reapply Merconvap liquid to former spill site and wipe up any
residue with Merconwipes™.
6. Dispose of used Mercontainers and any contaminated items as per local environmental
authority regulations. Do not incinerate. Wipe shoes, gloves and any other contaminated
items with Merconwipes.
Respirator, Double Filter
To protect the science teacher during brief periods of exposure
to acid fumes, organic solvent vapor, and dust—these
are NIOSH-approved respirators. The face mask is of pliable
plastic and can be worn with glasses or chemical splash
goggles. This is not a life-sustaining device and is meant
only for use in an environment where the oxygen level is
still quite good. Replacement cartridges—filters for acid, organic vapor, and dust
protection—are available separately in packages of two filters.
