Chemicals can affect the strength, flexibility, surface appearance, color, dimensions and
weight of plastics. Common effects are the following:
• Chemical attack on polymer chain (e.g., oxidation, depolymerization)
• Physical change (e.g., absorption of solvents that may cause softening and/or
swelling)
• Stress cracking
Mixtures of chemicals may react differently than individual substances.
As temperature increases, resistance to attack decreases.
Do not store strong oxidizing agents, such as concentrated
nitric acid, in
plastic labware. Prolonged
exposure to strong oxidizers causes embrittlement
and, ultimately, failure.
Never place plastic vessels in a flame.
