Collapsing Can—
Demonstration Kit
By: The Flinn Staff
Here’s a forceful demonstration—over 1,800 lbs of force! Simply place about a centimeter
of water in the bottom of the can and heat it until it boils and steam comes
out of the uncapped top. Remove the can from the heat, cap tightly and watch and
listen to the drama. As the can cools, a vacuum forms inside, and the can dramatically
collapses. A real attention-getter. Includes detailed instructions.

Breaking Board Paradox—
Demonstration Kit
By: The Flinn Staff
Simple, yet very dramatic. A thin white pine stick is placed over the edge of a
table. A sheet of tissue paper is placed over the stick and spread out on the table.
When the overhanging portion of the stick is hit sharply with a hammer it breaks.
The other end of the stick remains stationary and the paper is not torn. The large
surface area of the tissue paper provides 15 psi of pressure resisting the movement
of the stick. When struck, the stick cannot withstand the pressure and breaks.
Enough materials for 10 demonstrations.
Note: A hammer is required, but not included.

weighing 14.7 lbs and measuring 52 inches long, will drive home the point! Students
will be amazed how much the bar weighs when they lift it. They will be even more
impressed when they stand the atmosphere bar on end and “feel” the 14.7 lbs of
pressure. Instructions with teaching tips included.
