Cartesian Diver Construction—
Super Value Kit
By: Bob Becker, Kirkwood H.S., Kirkwood, MO
Students learn the relationship between pressure and air
volume and how air volume acts to regulate buoyancy by constructing cartesian
divers made of simple equipment and materials. Procedures for constructing 11
different types of cartesian divers are provided.
Super Value Kit is complete with 100 pipets and hex nuts. Requires water and twoliter
soda bottles. Includes Flinn Exclusive STEM Integration Guide.

Conservation of Mass
and Buoyancy—Student
Laboratory Kit
By: The Flinn Staff
Students first conduct an experiment to verify the law of conservation of mass in
a chemical reaction. They then perform a second experiment in which the product
gases are supported by buoyant forces in air. Air acts as a fluid and so the final
mixture weighs less than the original. Because a balance actually weighs objects
and converts this to mass readings, the apparent mass discrepancy really helps
students understand the difference between “weighing” and “massing.” Includes
chemicals and equipment for 15 complete experimental setups along with reproducible
student handouts, detailed background information and complete Teacher Notes
with sample data and answers to all questions.
Complete for 30 students working in pairs. Requires a balance with sensitivity at
least 0.01 g.

Discovering Density—
Looking for Patterns and
Trends—Super Value Laboratory Kit
By: The Flinn Staff
Using either “gold” or “silver” metal shot, students collect mass and volume data,
plot the data on a graph to identify the resulting pattern and trend and then analyze
the relationship. By comparing their results with known quantities, students identify
their metal and determine the accuracy of their method. Includes complete instructions
with reproducible student handouts and valuable Teacher Notes.
Super Value Kit is complete for 15 student groups. All materials are reusable.
Balances with 0.01-g precision are recommended.

It’s All About Density—
An Introductory Super Value
Activity-Stations Kit
By: The Flinn Staff
Students determine the mass and volume of seven different materials—two regularly
shaped rectangular solids, a spherical solid, a cylindrical solid, an irregularly shaped
solid and two liquids. Students practice measuring volume using both a ruler and the
water displacement method. This kit is designed to have student groups move from
station to station and determine the density of a different material—allowing for a
very cost-conscious yet effective lab. Lab station instruction card masters, a prelab
activity, background information, post-lab questions and all necessary materials
(except 100 mL of distilled water) are provided in the kit.
Super Value Kit is complete for seven lab stations with two setups at each station—
enough for 28 students working in pairs. All materials are reusable.
