Students will eagerly “take the heat” as they discover for themselves the basic principles
of heat transfer with this series of four hands-on experiments.
• Conduction—Test the thermal conductivity of different materials, and compare the
results with known quantities.
• Convection of a Liquid—Investigate how temperature affects the density of a liquid,
and watch as convection currents are created when the hot and cold liquids rise
and sink, respectively.
• Convection of a Gas—Observe the dramatic effects of convection currents in air on
a lighted candle that will really make students use their “thinking caps.”
• Radiation—Explore heat transfer through radiation by measuring the temperature
increases for two types of sand exposed to a heat source.
Standard laboratory equipment and a light source are required, but not included.
Includes comprehensive background information, Teacher Notes and student
worksheets.
Complete for 12 student groups.

Heat Transfer Kit
By: The Flinn Staff
Students learn about the flow and transfer of
heat energy with this hands-on laboratory activity. They fill one insulated container
with hot water and the other with cold water; and link the two containers with an
aluminum transfer bar—heat transfer occurs across the bar. Students record the
temperature change of the water in the cups over time and relate the change to the
associated heat transfer. Kit contains aluminum transfer bar, two insulated containers,
two thermometers and detailed laboratory instructions. Purchase one as a
classroom demonstration, or purchase one for each laboratory group.

This “series” of four hands-on experiments and one demonstration provides students
with an in-depth understanding of heat, temperature and heat energy transfer.
• Conductometer—Compare thermal conductivity of five different metals.
• Specific Heat—Investigate the concepts of specific heat and calorimetry by heating
metal samples and placing them into foam calorimeter cups filled with water.
• Radiation Cans—Study heat transfer by means of infrared radiation, and explore
the properties of heat-absorbing and heat-reflecting materials.
• Relative Humidity and Dew Point—Use a sling psychrometer to validate the significance
of evaporation as a heat-removal method.
• Ball and Ring Apparatus—Included as a teacher demonstration to show the expansion
and contraction of metals in hot and cold environments, respectively.
Versatile “activity stations” allow different student groups to work independently
to explore a specific aspect of heat energy. Detailed instructions and Teacher Notes
are provided.
Complete for 30 students working in groups of three. An infrared heat source is
required and available separately.
