Sound Wave Interference
Tube—Student Activity Kit
By: The Flinn Staff
Demonstrate the apparent discrepant
effects of sound interference using an
easy-to-assemble apparatus. Build a solid
foundation for conceptual understanding by
constructing the path length of the apparatus
to correspond to the half-wavelength of
the 512-Hz tuning fork included with the kit.
An effective and fun demonstration as written,
it can also be modified to promote inquiry! Challenge students to customize
the apparatus for other tuning fork frequencies. Includes student worksheet and
comprehensive Teacher Notes with lab hints and teaching tips, sample data and
answers to all questions.

Sonic Flame Tube—
Demonstration Kit
By: The Flinn Staff
The Sonic Flame Tube, also called a
Ruben’s tube, is a demonstration that
allows students to visualize waves
and resonance. Natural gas is allowed
to flow through a 3-foot aluminum tube containing predrilled, evenly spaced holes,
and is then ignited. A speaker attached to the opposite end of the tube is used to send
specific frequency sound waves through the tube, creating resonance. Watch as
the gas flames above each hole move with the frequency, creating a beautiful wave
pattern that is due to the formation of nodes and antinodes in the tube. Apparatus
may be connected to an electronic instrument, such as a keyboard. Kit includes
materials to construct one permanent flame tube and instructions with safety information
and tips for generating resonant frequencies.
Note: A speaker is required and available separately.

Discovering the Speed of Sound
in Air—Student Laboratory Kit
By: The Flinn Staff
Striking a tuning fork and holding it over
the open end of a tube filled with water,
students slowly lift the tube and tuning
fork out of the water until they “hear” the resonance. They
then measure the length of the tube above the water’s
surface and use this value to calculate the wavelength
and speed of sound. Comes complete with student activity
sheets, detailed Teacher Notes and sample data. The experiment
requires the use of a tuning fork set ranging from 256
Hz to 512 Hz, which can be shared among student groups.
Complete for one student group. Classroom Set is
complete for 8 student groups. Tuning fork set, support
stand, and two extension clamps are required and available
separately. Includes Flinn Exclusive STEM Integration Guide.

Buzzer in a Vacuum
The buzzer operates on a DC power source. Turn the power
on, and it buzzes loudly. Connect a vacuum pump to the jar
assembly and turn on the pump. As air is pumped out of the
jar, the sound of the buzzer becomes fainter. When all the air
is removed, you can barely hear the sound. Slowly allow air to
re-enter the jar and the sound of the buzzer becomes stronger.
Requires 1⁄4" tubing. Vacuum pump available separately.

Singing Rods—
Demonstration Kit
By: The Flinn Staff
A classic demonstration—
times four! Demonstrate
resonance in a variety
of different metal rods.
Compare thick and thin rods, short and long rods and solid and hollow rods. Position
your fingers at different locations along the rods and hear the effect on the sound’s
frequency. Includes detailed instructions and a reproducible student worksheet.

AP7040 Singing Rods—Demonstration Kit $45.45
Audio Function Generator
Easily produce perfect tones between 10 Hz
and 10 kHz with this high-quality sound wave
generator. Ideal for acoustic demonstrations
that require precise sound frequencies like
the Doppler effect or sound wave resonance.
Or use it in conjunction with tuning forks to
determine exact pitch and illustrate beat frequencies. The electrical output is also ideal
for powering the Electromechanical Driver (AP5789) to produce perfect sinusoidal
vibrations that are great for displaying ripple patterns in Chladni plates, strings or ripple
tanks. Additional square wave output is provided to synchronize the sound output with
an oscilloscope. Students can then view the signal pattern on the oscilloscope screen.
Volume and frequency are easily set with separate control knobs. Frequency output is
shown on a 4-digit display. Resolution: 0.1 Hz below 1000 Hz; 1 Hz above 1000 Hz.

AP6529 Audio Function Generator $670.00
Electromechanical Driver
Ideal device for your harmonic motion demonstrations.
This ruggedly built oscillator will provide
mechanical vibrations for driving strings, springs,
ripple tanks, Chladni plates, or any other objects
used in wave demonstrations. It sits on any flat
surface or can be easily clamped to ring stand poles.
Unit can be powered by our Audio Driver AP6529.

Singing Tubes—
Demonstration Kit
By: The Flinn Staff
Mystify your students by creating a “singing” pipe organ from an
ordinary metal tube. Use a Bunsen
burner to heat a metal screen
hidden inside the tube. Remove the tube from the flame and the tube
immediately begins to hum loudly. Tip the tube horizontally and the
sound stops. The Singing Tube Demonstration comes with one 17"
long tube to demonstrate the “organ” principle. The Triple Singing
Tubes Demonstration comes with three different tube lengths—193/4",
191/2" and 131/8". Play the two longer tubes simultaneously to demonstrate
the principle of a beat frequency. Play the shorter tube to
produce a distinctly higher pitch to show how column length affects
the resonating frequency.
