Chemistry Laboratory Kits—Classifying Matter
Elements, Compounds
and Mixtures—
Student Laboratory Kit
By: The Flinn Staff
A great, high-quality introductory kit—ideal for teaching the concepts of elements,
compounds and mixtures. Four separate activities are provided. The first paper-andpencil
activity will familiarize students with common element symbols and names.
In the second “classification of matter” activity, students use a flow chart to classify
various materials as either an element, a compound or a mixture. Next is a laboratory
activity in which students use physical separation techniques to separate a mixture
consisting of sand, salt, zinc and iron filings. Then students chemically react aluminum
with copper(II) chloride to produce and isolate a new element and compound.
Detailed Teacher Notes and reproducible student handouts include easy-to-follow
lab instructions, sample data, answers to questions and in-depth background information.
All chemicals and specialized equipment are provided.
Complete for 30 students working in pairs. Super Value Kit is complete for 5 classes
of 30 students working in pairs. One magnetic wand is included with the kit—additional
wands are available separately.

Percent Water in a Hydrate—
Student Laboratory Kit
By: The Flinn Staff
Hydrates are pure substances that contain water molecules embedded in their crystal
structure. In this experiment, students heat a solid hydrate to remove the water
and then calculate the percent water by measuring the mass of the solid before and
after heating. From this percent water value, students identify the hydrate from a list
of possible unknowns. A great introduction to gravimetric analysis. Includes Teacher
Notes, extensive background material, reproducible student handouts and all necessary
crystalline hydrate samples and specialized equipment.
Complete for 30 students working in pairs.

Separation of a Mixture
by Filtration—Student
Laboratory Kit
By: The Flinn Staff
Classifying matter into mixtures or pure substances hinges on a key question—how
is the composition affected by a physical or chemical change? In this experiment,
students use both physical and chemical changes to separate a mixture of iron oxide
and salicylic acid. A sample of the mixture is weighed and added to sodium hydroxide
solution. After the salicylic acid dissolves, the solution is filtered to isolate the
insoluble iron oxide. Hydrochloric acid is then added to the solution to precipitate the
remaining salicylic acid, and the solution is filtered again to separate out the salicylic
acid. Students dry and weigh each component to determine its mass percent of the
mixture. A great quantitative activity for developing student lab skills in filtration and
other basic laboratory techniques.
Complete for 30 students working in pairs.

Separation of a Mixture—
Guided-Inquiry Kit
By: The Flinn Staff
Can the components of a mixture be separated? Students discover how to separate
certain mixtures in this two-part, guided-inquiry lab. A mixture is a combination of
two or more pure substances. Each of these substances retains its separate chemical
and physical properties. Students first examine the physical properties of salt,
sand, iron and stearic acid. Then they use their collected data to design and carry out
a procedure for separating a mixture of these substances. An engaging lab in which
students apply concepts, such as solubility, magnetism and filtration. Teacher Notes,
extensive background material and reproducible student handouts are included.
Full-size kits are complete for 30 students working in pairs. Small-size kits have
materials for 10 students working in pairs. Refill kits contain materials only.
