Build a Polarimeter—
Student Laboratory Kit
By: The Flinn Staff
Students get excited about studying organic compounds when they build their very
own polarimeter. A wide range of chemicals are able to interact with and rotate
polarized light. A polarimeter enables a chemist to investigate the extent of these
interactions. This kit contains enough materials to build eight simple polarimeters,
which can then be used to measure the rotation of polarized light by sugar solutions.
Complete for 24 students working in groups of three.

Quantitative Determination
of Food Dyes—Student
Laboratory Kit
By: The Flinn Staff
Students use a spectrophotometer to determine the optimal wavelength of absorbed
light for each of three FD&C food dyes: Red 40, Yellow 5 and Blue 1. Students then
develop standard absorption versus concentration curves for each of the dyes.
Absorption data for fixed concentrations of drink mix solutions are generated at these
three wavelengths. Students then use the data to determine the concentration of
each food dye in the powdered drink mixes. Includes all chemicals and consumable
supplies needed to perform the lab.
Complete for 30 students working in pairs.

Making UV-Sensitive Paper—
Student Laboratory Kit
By: The Flinn Staff
Students will make their own sheets of photosensitive (also called blueprint) paper in
the laboratory by dipping porous paper in two different iron salt solutions. Students
will then develop images of their choice by exposing the treated paper to ultraviolet
light from the sun. Background information, detailed procedure, and all necessary
photographic chemicals to make 100 “photographs” or images are included in the kit.
Complete for 30 students working in pairs. Opaque or translucent “nonmetallic”
objects are needed to make the images.

Flame Test—
Student Laboratory Kit
By: The Flinn Staff
By simply dipping a moist wooden splint in the solid metallic salt then placing the
wooden splint in the flame, students will be able to identify the color of light emitted
for calcium, copper, lithium, potassium, sodium and strontium. The basic lab activity
is ideal for physical science and introductory chemistry. Incorporate the optional data
analysis section and extensions to challenge your higher level students. Includes
reproducible student handouts, complete Teacher Notes with sample data, answers
to questions and ideas for extensions, plus all materials needed to perform the lab.
Complete for 30 students working in pairs.
