One-Pot Plastic Synthesis—
Student Laboratory Kit
By: The Flinn Staff
Plastic is a basic component of cars, houses, cell phones, clothing and computers,
to name just a small handful of its applications. In this experiment, students design
and synthesize their own plastics from a simple, one-pot, three-component process.
The lab introduces polymers, aqueous reaction chemistry, experimental design and
materials chemistry. The plastic can be shaped or colored to suit individual student
preference and students can experiment with the reaction parameters to adjust
color, hardness and flexibility. Includes reproducible student handouts, Teacher
Notes and all necessary chemicals.
Complete for 30 students working in pairs.

Recycling Plastics
by Density—Student
Laboratory Kit
By: The Flinn Staff
Recycling plastics is a special challenge because of the variety of plastics in everyday
use. In this student lab kit, students investigate the composition and properties
of plastics and their recycling codes. Students determine the densities of “unknown”
plastic samples, identify the unknowns and learn why sorting and separating
discarded plastics helps make recycling more effective. The density range for each
type of plastic (PETE, HDPE, PVC, LDPE, PP and PS) is estimated using a “sink or
swim” method in a series of liquids. In order of increasing density, the liquids tested
are corn oil, 35% ethyl alcohol, water, 10% sodium chloride solution and glycerin.
Includes reproducible student handouts, detailed background information, complete
Teacher Notes with sample data and answers to all questions and all necessary
chemicals and consumable supplies.
Complete for 30 students working in groups of three.

Magnetic Polymer Slime—
Student Laboratory Kit
By: The Flinn Staff
Making slime out of glue and borax is a popular polymer experiment in many science
classrooms. With a simple addition of glue, borax and iron filings, students can make
slime that is attracted to a magnetic field! Students will have fun observing how their
polymer reacts to a magnet. Includes reproducible student hand-outs, Teacher Notes,
magnets and all necessary chemicals.
Complete for 30 students working in pairs.

Polymers and Conductivity—
Lab Kit & Digital Content
By: The Flinn Staff
Polymers are an indispensable part of modern life. The word polymer is derived
from two Greek words, polys (many) and meros (part). Polymers can be formed into
fibers, drawn out into thin films or molded into a variety of solid objects. This lab
lets students make their own polymer. By turning it into a sensor, the conductive
properties of the polymer are investigated and tested by exposure to acidic or basic
environments.
Completed for 30 students working in pairs.
