Students build simple electrochemical cells using a Petri dish, pencil leads and a
9-volt battery and then investigate the chemical reaction that occurs when current is
forced through water. By comparing the amount of gas and indicator color changes
at each electrode, students identify individual reactions that occur and determine
the overall chemical reaction. This safe and economical experiment is also a great
“classifying matter” activity to prove water is a compound. Includes reproducible

Build a Solar Cell—Student Activity Kit

The solar cell consists of conductive glass plates coated with
nanocrystalline titanium oxide coated with a natural dye that
absorbs visible light at the anode and graphite at the cathode. Light striking the dye
surface promotes an electron to a photoexcited state, which transfers an electron
into the conduction band of titanium oxide. Electrons migrate through the titanium
oxide film and travel through the external circuit to the cathode. The cells may be
prepared in assembly-line fashion—plan for about two hours to complete the setup
and demonstration. There are two good stopping points if the entire procedure cannot
be completed at one time.
Complete with enough materials to make four solar cells. A multimeter can be used
to measure the voltage of the solar cell and is available separately. Includes Flinn
