Painted Lady Caterpillars
A classroom classic! Painted ladies (Vanessa cardui) undergo complete metamorphosis
from caterpillar to butterfly over the course of several weeks. These beautiful butterflies
are one of the most widely distributed species in the world. Shipped with food and
complete care instructions. Organisms raised in the classroom should not be released
into the wild. A state permit is required to ship to Hawaii, Alaska and Puerto Rico.
★MAINTENANCE: Maintain caterpillars on the food they are shipped with. Adult butterflies can be
kept in a net house away from direct sunlight. Contact us for a free care guide with detailed instructions
on the care of adult butterflies.

Earthworms
An animal that everyone has seen but may not know much about. Members of the
phylum Annelida—the segmented worms. The common earthworm (Lumbricus sp.)
is a vital component of moist soil ecosystems, aerating and enriching enormous
quantities of material annually. Earthworms in the classroom can be used as food for
amphibians and reptiles and as participants in various behavioral studies.
★MAINTENANCE: Easy to culture and maintain although they must be kept relatively cool
(temperatures much over 15 °C should be avoided). Normally shipped in a wax-lined box, earthworms
may require special shipping and handling requirements during extreme weather.

Nematodes—Eels
The roundworms. Turbatrix aceti (also called Anguillula aceti) is the common
laboratory specimen from this group. Known as the “vinegar eel” because it is
usually found living in the sediment of unpasteurized vinegar where it feeds on
bacteria and fungi.
★MAINTENANCE: Maintain vinegar eels in moderate light at room temperature, in virtually any
kind of glass or plastic container. Culture in apple cider vinegar (200 mL or more) to which a few cubes
of apple have been added.

LM1101 Vinegar Eels (Turbatrix aceti). Nearly transparent, it bears
live young which can often be seen developing within
the uterus of the larger females. Its complete,
one-way
digestive tract is also readily visible.

Lumbriculus variegatus
Easy to culture and easy to see, this aquatic oligochaete worm makes a very versatile
classroom experimental animal. The nearly transparent worm has distinct segmented
parts—and an especially prominent dorsal blood vessel which pumps like a heart.
Chemical effects on the pulsating blood vessel are easily observed and timed. This is
an ideal organism for studies of behavior, locomotion, regeneration, and drug studies.
Comes with background and culturing information. Class size of 30.

Redworms
Eisenia foetida. The number-one worm of choice for vermicomposting—the art of
employing worms to convert garbage into rich, organic fertilizer. A state permit is
required to ship to Utah. Not available for Alaska, Hawaii and Puerto Rico.
★MAINTENANCE: Redworms are common in manure piles, compost piles, and in soils with high
levels of organic material. They love garbage and love to turn it into compost. Worm bins can be maintained
right in the classroom since, when properly maintained, they are completely odorless.
