Kinetic Energy Ball Drop—
Demonstration Kit
Demonstrate the relationship between speed
and kinetic energy by dropping a ball from two different heights onto a bed of soft
clay. All materials are completely reusable. Detailed instructions, historical background
information, and student worksheet are provided.
Note: The clay must be heated to soften it.

Bowling Ball Pendulum—
Demonstration Kit
Hold a heavy bowling ball pendulum against the
tip of your nose. Release the bowling ball without moving your head, and allow it to
swing through its pendulum arc. The students’ shock and fear will be very apparent
as the fast-moving, heavy bowling ball makes its return trip toward your head.
However, to the amazement of the students, the bowling ball gracefully touches the
tip of your nose—dramatically showing the law of conservation of energy. Includes
instructions and a reproducible student worksheet.

PSWORKS™ Conservation of
Energy Tracks
This activity quickly illustrates that the kinetic
energy of a ball at the bottom of a track is directly related to the potential energy it
had at the top. Precision-cut tracks are made of durable, high-quality wood. Complete
instructions are provided.
A Flinn PSworks Support Stand or stand and clamp is required, but not included.

PSWORKS™ Roller Coaster Track
As the steel marble rolls along the hilly track, it
continuously exchanges potential and kinetic
energy—clearly visible by the speed of the marble. A Flinn PSworks Support Stand
and Photogate Timer are required, but not included.

Roller Coasters—
Flinn STEM Design Challenge™
By: The Flinn Staff
First, students determine how changing the release height and mass of a ball affects
the distance the ball will travel on a straight track with a single rise. Students apply their
findings and knowledge of conservation of energy to design a roller coaster with specific
criteria and constraints, using only the materials provided, to create a thrilling yet safe ride!
Complete for 30 students working in groups of three. Support stand and ring clamp
are recommended for each group and available separately.

Magnetic Linear Accelerator—
Demonstration Kit
A slow-moving ball bearing collides with a magnet–ball bearing system, knocking
away the last ball in the series, obeying the conservation of momentum. One problem—
the knocked-away ball appears to shoot at nearly three times the original speed!
When a series of magnets and ball bearings are aligned, a simple magnetic linear
accelerator is created. Similar to the energy stored in a stretched spring, or gravitational
potential energy, magnetic fields also store energy and give the ball bearing its
unbelievable boost. Background information and complete instructions are provided.
